Reduce fire risk at cycle storage areas

E-bikes and e-scooters pose an increase in fire risk during charging and storage. BikeAway has developed a system to reduce the risk of Fire spread and compatmentalisation of fire. All Warrior products can be fitted with a Pyroplex Safex Fire seal to the door, you just need to request this when ordering. BikeAway feel that this essential for underground or indoor storage areas.

Fire is a risk that needs to be taken into consideration when developing an indoor cycle storage area. We have followed guidelines from the local government paper ‘Fire safety in purpose-built blocks of flats’, initially published in July 2011 and the MHCLG Consolidated Advice note of January 2020 to make Warriors compartmentalised and fire safe. We have also used information from these documents to discuss fire risk to cycle parking.

E-bike storage

When storing bicycles, prams, scooters etc. fire risk is minimal however with the recent popularity of E-Bike and Electric scooters in the UK fire risk during storage has increased. This is due to the use of Lithium Batteries which have been known to catch fire. Fire risk remains low with E-bikes and Electric scooters when purchased from the manufacturer, but on occasions they are tampered with by their owners to increase speed.

This modification may not be within the manufacturer’s specification and this can lead to undue load on the battery and can cause overheating and damage to battery cells, this increases the potential of a fire when left in storage, if a lithium battery catches fire the fire load can be quite substantial.

Warrior horizontal lockers are made from galvanised steel. They are self-coloured to reduce risk of any burning paint fumes if there is a fire within a locker. They are also a good solution for outdoor storage as wood or plastic is flammable and not advised under current guidance.

Warrior 2 horizontal bike locker and Warrior 4 two tier lockers are estimated to withstand the fire load of any electric bike or scooter, we recommend when it comes to storing E-Bikes and Electric Scooters the lockers if possible should be placed outside.

Inside cycle storage areas

If there is no option but to have the cycle store inside a building as there is no usable outside space, then we recommend that a Pyroplex Safex Fire seal needs to be fitted to the door of the Warrior lockers, this can be added when ordering Warriors. The manufacturer recommends that this is an effective fire and smoke seal for up to 30 minutes. We will also use signage within the locker that states user must not store hazardous chemicals, gas containers or flammable liquids. There is also instruction displayed to all E-bike users within the locker to get any charging units checked annually by a qualified electrician as a Pat-Test. It is recommended that there are dedicated charging areas that are suitably fire separated from the building or charging of batteries should be done under supervision within the cyclist apartment.

Fire Evaluation Warrior Cycle Lockers

Lockers should be positioned in rows 1200-1500mm apart and always positioned side by side with no gaps. This leaves no room for poor housekeeping whereby residents leaving unwanted items, which could be a fire hazard. This ability for Warriors to create good housekeeping is a major fire safety factor for large cycle storage units over more traditional open stands or racks as well as compartmentation stopping the spread of fire and smoke.

Arson can be a common cause of fire so it is imperative to have secure cycle storage to prevent this risk. Warriors are supplied with a lock and key and should be locked on installation. Keys should then be allocated out to residents as required stopping the chance of arsonist targeting an empty locker.

A record of who is using each locker should be kept by the building management for security reasons, a small annual fee can be made to the cyclist to cover the costs of administration, this also reduces the risk of the locker being misused. Warriors are supplied with door numbers and numbered key fobs to help facilitate this.
